NACDS TSE Exhibitors Donate Thousands of Products through MCCA’s Conventions C.A.R.E. to Assist Boston Communities

Boston – Exhibitors at the 2016 National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Total Store Expo donated several thousand consumer goods to be dispersed to various charitable organizations throughout the Greater Boston community. The NACDS Total Store Expo was held August 6-9 at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. I am very grateful to NACDS and their exhibitors for the generous donations that they have supplied to our local community health centers.

NACDS worked with the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority’s (MCCA) Conventions C.A.R.E. (Community Assistance by Responsible Events) program, which is distributing the products to local nonprofit organizations to be dispersed to those in need. The donations included health and wellness products such as vitamins, medications, bandages and first aid supplies.

Conventions C.A.R.E. was established by the MCCA in 2010 to benefit local non-profits, convention and trade show exhibitors, and convention centers. Local nonprofits benefit from useful donations, while exhibitors are saved the time and expense of shipping goods after a show ends. The MCCA and its partners in turn help divert these items from local landfills, which supports the Authority’s commitment to sustainable practices.

“NACDS chain and supplier members are highly engaged in the communities in which they operate, and NACDS reflects that spirit by partnering with the host cities of our conferences in ways that include donations of health and wellness products,” said NACDS President and CEO Steven C. Anderson, IOM, CAE. “We appreciate what the MCCA has done to create Conventions C.A.R.E., which really sets the standard for effectiveness in product donation programs.”

“As a state authority, we are committed to having a positive impact on our host communities by providing support to local non-profit organizations,” said David Gibbons, executive director of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority. “I am very grateful to NACDS and their exhibitors for the generous donations that they have supplied to our local community health centers.”

Some of the nonprofit social service agencies that are benefitting from the contribution from NACDS are:

·       Condon Community Center

·       Gavin Foundation

·       Labouré Center

·       South Boston Community Health Center

·       South Boston Neighborhood House

·       Boston Healthcare for the Homeless Program

With a third semi of supplies ready to roll to the victims of West Virginia’s devastating flooding of three weeks ago, Fruth Pharmacy accepted an invitation from NACDS.org to describe the scene in West Virginia – and the efforts of the company’s customers, employees and business partners to play a role in the relief effort. The hope is that the ongoing and significant needs of West Virginians will be understood in the aftermath of a “thousand-year flood.”

Extended Fruth Pharmacy Family Steps Up Amid Flood

2016-07-13T11:40:11-04:00Categories: Article|Tags: , |

Mother Nature’s might is revealing itself yet again in the West Virginia flooding of three weeks ago. Also on display is the power of the helping hand and the human spirit – with the customers, employees and business partners of Fruth Pharmacy figuring significantly in the relief effort.

NACDS.org talked with Lynne Fruth, president of Fruth Pharmacy and a member of the NACDS Board of Directors, and with several team members, about the flood and its aftermath.

“VERY DEVASTATING”

Fruth describes the flash flooding of June 23, 2016, as only a true West Virginian can. She tells of the tragic loss, and near misses, of people she knows well, and she compares the flooding to other infamous days in the state’s history.

“It reminds me of the Buffalo Creek flood,” she said, referring to a tragic dam burst in 1972. “People heard the water coming, ran to the highest point and watched the water come in.”

Given the number of people in the extended pharmacy family who know Fruth, the question on the minds of many is how the people and property of the 29-store chain fared.

“We were really fortunate,” she said. “There was disaster all around us. Our new store took on minimal water, but we were really completely spared as a chain. We had no loss of employees or their immediate family’s homes. Having said that, within a few miles of our stores, we had loss of life, children swept away, tremendous loss. It is very devastating.”

She recounted one story of a neighbor who was sad to stand on the site of her family’s dream home that had been ruined, but whose emotions were focused more intently on those across the street who were swept away along with their home in the flood waters – leaving them among those who truly lost everything.

“That’s perspective,” Fruth said.

For West Virginians, the stories are many and cut deep – and so, too, are the motivations to help make a difference for those who got by with a near miss.

“HELPING CUSTOMERS KNOW THEY’RE MAKING A DIFFERENCE”

When Fruth talks about her company’s involvement in the relief effort, she puts everything in terms of the company’s customers, employees and [ READ MORE ]

NACDS Foundation Supports Increased HIV Testing Awareness Study ongoing amid observance of National HIV Testing Day on June 27

2016-06-27T10:41:40-04:00Categories: Press Release|Tags: , |

Arlington, Va. – As public health authorities seek to raise awareness about HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) testing, a study funded by the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Foundation is evaluating a model which may provide patients with increased access to HIV and Hepatitis C testing, and link patients to a specialized physician or health department as needed for further care.

Experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are providing technical assistance for the Foundation’s study, and other key public health agencies also are partnering on the study. This initiative reflects the priority that the CDC is placing on raising awareness about improving access and awareness regarding HIV testing, as evidenced by the agency’s annual awareness campaign, National HIV Testing Day on June 27.

The NACDS Foundation study, led by principal investigators at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Ferris State University College of Pharmacy, currently is underway in 50 stores with pharmacies, and a total of 75 locations are planned in the greater Detroit, Mich.; West Virginia/Ohio; and Atlanta, Ga., metropolitan areas. The study is designed to evaluate the impact of expanding access to community testing for both HIV and the Hepatitis C virus.

“This study exemplifies key goals of the NACDS Foundation because it combines an identified public health need to improve access to testing and care with awareness and prevention priorities that require collaboration and public engagement,” said NACDS Foundation President Kathleen Jaeger. “Evidence-based research on HIV and Hepatitis C expands upon the NACDS Foundation’s ongoing study of point-of-care testing for flu and strep throat.”

Nearly 45,000 people are diagnosed with HIV every year and approximately 1.2 million people in the U.S. are currently living with HIV. However, one in eight people don’t know they have it. The need for testing and increased awareness is critical, as more than 90 percent of HIV infections in the U.S. could be prevented by testing and diagnosing people with HIV and making sure they receive early, ongoing treatment. The CDC recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV as part of routine healthcare.

NACDS Meets with CDC and other Stakeholders on Pandemic Readiness

2016-06-23T10:25:22-04:00Categories: Article|Tags: , |

Last week NACDS, with support from the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), held a meeting to discuss strategies to improve public-private partnerships, which would lead to earlier and more broadly available pandemic vaccine.

The public health community works with pharmacists and pharmacies to enhance the delivery of essential immunizations and other medications to advance public health priorities. As the face of neighborhood healthcare, pharmacies and pharmacists offer convenient and accessible patient-centered services every day, and during public health emergencies.

During the meeting, NACDS, CDC, ASTHO, and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) presented an overview of a formalized Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) template, which outlines a standardized pandemic preparedness approach in community pharmacy.  The draft MOU, vetted by NACDS and other partner organizations, formalizes responsibilities between state-level public health agencies and community pharmacies in pandemic vaccination planning and response, specifically related to federally purchased and procured pandemic vaccine. The process to implement this MOU is currently being piloted with community pharmacies and health departments in Arkansas, Tennessee and Georgia.

Panelists from state health departments and state pharmacy associations highlighted the successful partnerships and pandemic planning work being done in their states: Kentucky, Washington and Michigan.  Following in-depth discussion regarding the barriers and benefits community pharmacies face in planning for pandemics, the CDC closed the meeting by sharing its national vision for pharmacy and public health collaboration and a future scale-up of the pilot project.

Veterans from World War II and the Korean War visiting Washington, D.C. last year as part of Brookshire Grocery Co.’s annual Heroes Flight program, which has brought more than 330 veterans to D.C. to honor their service in commemoration of Memorial Day.

Last week, NACDS President & CEO Steven Anderson, IOM, CAE, asked NACDS members in CEO Issue Update to share what they do to “remember and honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation” in commemoration of Memorial Day. Brookshire Grocery Co. (BGC) responded that this year marks the 12th annual Heroes Flight to Washington, D.C., for seven veterans of World War II and 24 Korean War veterans. BGC provides Heroes Flight to selected veterans at no cost to them so they can visit memorials in the nation’s capital, several of which were erected in their honor. Several BGC employees accompanied the veterans on their journey.

This year, the group visited the World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War memorials on the National Mall, and were led on a tour of the Capitol by Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX). The veterans also got to participate in the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery and visited the U.S. Marines, Navy and Airforce memorials, in addition to other landmarks. BGC began the program in 2010 and since then more than 330 veterans from Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas have participated in the trips.

Veterans are a part of all our lives and it is imperative to remember and acknowledge the sacrifices they made to keep our country safe—and free. Veterans often serve without asking for anything in return, which makes this YouTube video of last year’s Heroes Flight so touching. One veteran modestly recounts the actions his team took that led to each of them receiving medals for bravery, and another recalls the loss of his brother in World War II, a painful reminder of the ultimate cost of war.

Members of the veterans’ communities gathered at Love Field in Dallas to send the veterans off on their journey to D.C. on May 30, and welcomed them home yesterday—smiling, applauding and expressing gratitude for [ READ MORE ]

NACDS Foundation Launches Online Messages for Puerto Rico Zika Prevention Campaign Online displays and microsite join radio messages launched last week

2016-05-17T10:23:58-04:00Categories: Press Release|Tags: , |

Arlington, Va. – As part of a Zika education initiative in Puerto Rico, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Foundation today launched an online presence that will complement radio messages that began airing on Monday, May 9.

Since announcing this campaign a week ago, it has been wonderful to hear from other organizations that have expressed an interest in helping to sustain this initiative. We hope that these and additional partnerships will help to meet this pressing health need for as long as it exists.

Like the radio messages, the online displays encourage women and their families to seek advice from physicians and pharmacists about ways to protect themselves and their unborn children from the effects of Zika. The online displays link to a microsite that provides easy access to vital information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the CDC Foundation.

“The radio and online messages share the same goal: to help educate and empower women in Puerto Rico and their families about where they can turn to help protect themselves and their unborn children,” said Kathleen Jaeger, president of the NACDS Foundation. “Since announcing this campaign a week ago, it has been wonderful to hear from other organizations that have expressed an interest in helping to sustain this initiative. We hope that these and additional partnerships will help to meet this pressing health need for as long as it exists.”

The NACDS Foundation primarily focuses on fostering evidence-based research through strategic partnerships. Based on conversations with public health authorities, the NACDS Foundation made the decision to assist with the prevention education effort. The NACDS Foundation intends to leverage the effort by securing additional partners to extend the campaign for a year, or as needed.

“I personally appreciate this meaningful work to help the people of Puerto Rico address a public health situation facing this generation and generations to come,” said Luis Fortuño, former Governor of Puerto Rico, when the campaign was announced last week. “At times like this, the needs are great, and raising awareness is among those critical needs. I applaud the philanthropic and private [ READ MORE ]
