The National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Total Store Expo returned to Boston, MA, for the first time in three years — bringing together NACDS member-retailers and suppliers after three years of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and innovating boldly to meet the evolving needs of patients and consumers.

From August 27-29, small, mid-size and large companies converged at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center to collaborate, connect and foster strategic business partnerships.

On Saturday, August 27, NACDS suppliers and chains conducted 5400 meetings during Meet the Market, a highly popular aspect of the Total Store Expo conference schedule which offers an exclusive opportunity for NACDS members to learn more about the latest and greatest innovative products, technologies and services through a series of 10-minute appointments arranged by NACDS.

During the Sunday Business Program at the NACDS Total Store Expo, NACDS Leadership discussed the industry’s rapid acceleration toward the future of total health and wellness — spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic — and united through NACDS.

NACDS Chair Brian Nightengale, president, Good Neighbor Pharmacy, said:

“Although [NACDS] is collectively diverse, we stand united in a common cause: to transform the pharmacy industry into a force greater than the sum of its parts. Together, we constitute the most accessible, most trusted, and most affordable healthcare destination in America. As such, we seek an expanded role within our country’s health and wellness ecosystem.”

In describing pharmacies’ successes on behalf of the American people, NACDS President & CEO Steven C. Anderson said:

“NACDS has been at this a long time: advancing pharmacies as the face of neighborhood healthcare. The pandemic confirmed our case, and re-doubled our resolve. These issues are accelerating now because people know that retailers and suppliers were there when it mattered most – with accessible and equitable care.”

Former United States Secretary of the Treasury, Lawrence Summers, was the keynote speaker at this year’s NACDS Total Store Expo. Summers said of pharmacy:

“You are ready to help our country be a leader in health again — and I thank you for that.”

The NACDS Total Store Expo also featured a vibrant educational component that included topics of relevance to the pharmacy, to consumer goods, and to the entire supply chain:

Sessions held on Saturday and Sunday at the NACDS TSE featured topics including: how to lead with authenticity; strategies to build a resilient supply chain; pharmaceutical trends, issues and forecasts; the evolving retail landscape and shoppers’ new expectations for brands and retailers; the future of the health and wellness care beyond the COVID-19 pandemic; and pharmacies’ role in improving mental and behavioral health

Additionally, the NACDS Political Involvement Reception — held on Saturday, August 27 — featured remarks by American political commentator and former presidential adviser, David Gergen:
