Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico as a powerful Category 4 hurricane on September 20, leaving widespread damage in its wake. NACDS member companies have been affected by the storm and—in collaboration with public health partners and emergency preparedness authorities— are working to meet the ongoing needs of people affected by the hurricane.

NACDS traditionally documents the engagement of member companies to provide ideas about how interested individuals and companies can lend assistance – particularly since long-term support will be necessary for the affected areas. To provide new or updated information, please email NACDS’ Lisa Boylan. This information will be updated regularly.

To date, these are the member actions NACDS has observed in media reports:

  • CVS Health announced that its customers and colleagues donated nearly $4 million to support the Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico communities that were devastated by recent hurricanes. The company also announced that it will donate more than $6 million of critical products and supplies to these communities, bringing CVS Health’s total support to $10 million. The funds will be split evenly between Unidos por Puerto Rico, Rebuild Texas Fund and the Florida Disaster Fund to help support rebuilding efforts in these affected communities over the coming weeks and months.
  • Discount Drug Mart said that during the month of October, customers will be able to make a donation at the time of purchase to the Disaster Relief Fund, an organization providing essential materials to those affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria, as well as other disaster areas around the country. Since completing the in-store hurricane relief effort, Discount Drug Mart has donated $96,130 to the Disaster Relief Fund.
  • Walgreens has committed to a $250,000 donation to American Red Cross Hurricane Maria relief efforts. In addition, Walgreens customers can also donate to Red Cross hurricane relief efforts at approximately 8,000 Walgreens and Duane Reade locations throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Customers can make donations at store checkout.
  • Walmart has committed $5 million in support of Hurricane Maria relief efforts. This builds on the commitments previously announced by Walmart and the Walmart Foundation totaling $35 million to support 2017 hurricane assistance in response to Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. The Walmart Foundation is also committing $500,000 to Operation Homefront’s Critical Financial Assistance program to help meet the unique and urgent needs of military families affected by the 2017 hurricane season.
