Arlington, Va. – The National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS), the American Public Health Association (APHA) and the CDC Foundation will host a pre-conference workshop designed to convene public health, pharmacy and healthcare stakeholders to identify gaps in patient care access, leverage partnerships, and determine practices for improved population health outcomes. The forum will take place on Saturday, November 10, 2018, in advance of the APHA Annual Meeting and Expo, at the San Diego Convention Center.
The workshop, “Advancing Health Equity and Patient Care through Public Health and Community Pharmacy Partnerships,” will focus on the power of public-private collaboration to enhance diabetes and hypertension treatment, to enhance preventive health services including immunizations, and to advance other pivotal topics.
The pre-conference workshop is particularly timely given the publication of an article in the October Journal of Preventive Medicine, titled “Impact of community pharmacist-provided preventive services on clinical, utilization, and economic outcomes: An umbrella review.”

The research was funded by NACDS. A representative of the UPMC Center for High-Value Health Care will present at the pre-conference workshop.
“With the ongoing shift from volume to value and increased accountability of healthcare providers for managing population health and costs, health systems must adopt new strategies for utilizing their resources more efficiently, including the delivery of preventive services,” the article states. “Community pharmacies are particularly well positioned to support these efforts.”
NACDS President and CEO Steven C. Anderson, IOM, CAE, said, “This year’s session is the natural progression of NACDS’ collaboration to help improve public health through prevention and treatment alike. The recent publishing of the Journal of Preventive Medicine article demonstrates the comprehensive work underway to better leverage community pharmacy and other resources to advance the nation’s public health goals.”
Judith Monroe, MD, president and CEO of the CDC Foundation, said, “The CDC Foundation focuses on creating greater impact for public health through collaboration. We look forward to co-hosting this event and exploring new and creative ways to work with community pharmacists and advance our work together.” Monroe will open the pre-conference workshop by leading a plenary session on “Social Determinants of Health and Equity.”
