The new healthcare reform law makes significant changes to the Medicaid program, expanding program eligibility to an estimated 16 million more people. The law also makes changes to the average manufacturer price-based reimbursement system created by the Deficit Reduction Act (DRA) of 2005. This session will provide an overview of the current Medicaid program, the new law’s changes to eligibility, as well as a detailed description of the pharmacy reimbursement provisions, and how they intersect with the NACDS-NCPA litigation which halted the reimbursement cuts mandated by the DRA. .
The new healthcare reform law provides a series of challenges and opportunities for pharmacy, beyond the expansion of the Medicaid program. The law is expected to add 16 million additional people to the private insurance market, and also includes provisions on DME accreditation, medication therapy management, the Part D donut hole, and other issues that directly impact pharmacy. This session will provide an overview of the coverage expansion, and a description of key pharmacy provisions.
